Mathematics
Head of Faculty: Mr Maninderjit Neta, The Green School for Girls
The course aims to extend and deepen your knowledge and application of Mathematics to aid problem-solving
and modelling of real-life situations.
The Statistics module explores the use of data in everyday life and links well with Life Sciences, such as Biology, Geography, Sociology and Psychology.
The Mechanics module looks at the forces and motions used by us all in everyday situations and links well with Physics.
You will develop your ability to analyse and interpret information, manipulate mathematical formulae and problem-solving skills.
How will it be assessed?
A-level Mathematics is a two-year course. The examining board is Edexcel.
There are 3 units to be studied across year 12 and 13. These modules are:
- Pure Mathematics
- Mechanics
- Statistics
The units will be assessed by three papers at the end of year 13. Each paper is worth 100 marks. Paper 1 and 2 both examine Pure Mathematics while paper 3, equally, examines the Statistics and Mechanics modules.
Where will it lead?
Mathematics is a very versatile subject and is useful for practically every career.
It can be studied as a single subject at university, but it also pairs up particularly well in joint honours degrees, including Sciences, Economics, Business, Geography Astronomy and Languages.
As well as Mathematics being a well-respected A-level and degree, the skills of logic developed and the knowledge which you will have learnt is useful in an array of future careers – not just accountancy!
Enrichment opportunities

- Mentoring of students at KS3 and KS4
- Helping students in year 11 prepare for their GCSE examinations
- Master classes and taster sessions for year 12 Mathematics
- UKMT individual and team Maths Challenges
Entry requirements
